Characteristics of Alginic Acid:

Alginic acid is a natural polysaccharide uronic acid, mainly existing in the cell walls of brown algae (such as kelp and giant algae), and is a linear copolymer formed by β -D-mannuronic acid (M) and α -L-gururonic acid (G) through 1,4- bonding.Alginic acid itself is insoluble in water and organic solvents, but it is soluble in alkaline hydroxide solutions, forming a viscous colloid. It has the characteristic of rapid water absorption and can be used as a dehydrating agent and sizing agent. In industry, alginic acid is often used in the form of a sodium salt (sodium alginate), which is highly soluble in water, forming a high-viscosity solution and demonstrating excellent biocompatibility, film-forming property, stability and thickening effect. Sodium alginate can undergo ion exchange with divalent cations (such as Ca²⁺, Sr²⁺) under mild conditions to form thermally irreversible gels.
